Exercise 8 : First Jury

In this exercise, we were expected to synthesize the previously experienced concepts and create a 3D design that defines voids that are in an orderly relationship with each other. In the beginning i decided to use 3 different shapes which are 45° triangle, square and rectangle.I had 3 different units; B,C,D and Group A is formed by these 3 units come together in an order. Also i had 93 elements in total. I chose hierarchy as my principle and i tried to maintain this hierarchical order in A groups with the help of scale change. The group A in the middle is 1,5 times bigger than the surrounding       groups and units.

I took out one rectangle from B and one square from C thus they had new personalities ( B' ,C' ). Also new combinations and connections have been made possible in this way. Regarding the use of color, i used white,3 shades of grey and black in one group in order to create a color transition. When we look at the whole design, I have placed the groups so that this color transition can be seen from the light to the dark.

Exercise 7b : Polyrhythm

Polyrhythm is the simultaneous occurrence of sharply contrasting rhythms within a composition. In this exercise we were required to make a composition representing a polyrhythm using wooden sticks on a black cardboard. I used two different rhythms ; in one of them woodsticks are 3 cm, they have 30° angles and wave-shape.I used this rhythm two times in my composition on two opposite sides. In the other one woodsticks are 6 cm, they have 90° and 60° angles.

Exercise 7a : Rhythm

The photographer shot a portrait of dancer with a slow shutter speed in order to capture her movements. In my opinion, this photo is able to convey the movement of the
dancer and rhythm in a creative way.Rhythm is achieved through the repetition of components. Elements like her arms, hands, head and front leg are repeated to create a flowing effect and also it guides us to follow the continuity.

Exercise 6b

In this exercise we were required to make a 2-D composition representing the concept of hierarchy by using only rectangular elements.I decided to create an order on the rectangles that made of craft paper by duplicating and using them on a scale of half. My main problem in this composition was that I did not use the black cardboard as an element.

Exercise 6a : Visual Hierarchy

As you look at this artwork, the first thing you notice is the circle shaped egg. The designer of it created an order with the square eggs and put a circle shaped one to stand out and get your attention. It looks different and important than what surrounds it. According to my research, visual hierarchy puts in a particular order to the places we needed to see by importance so in this way the designer can direct us. In here we can see there is a rule ( same space and repetition) between the square eggs and the circler one breaks this rule. So it is even easier to see the difference.

Exercise 5a : Dominance & Contrast

           M.C. Escher / Balcony

When you look at this drawing, the middle part will attract the eye and get noticed first. Because the middle part has more visual weight than the other parts. Things that create visual weight are the shape and size difference. Sides of the drawing are orthogonal, element in the middle has a circle shape and it takes more space than the buildings around it.This creates the dominant focal point.Dominance helps create an area of interest, starting point in this drawing. Another thing about it, the middle part seems to be approaching the viewers so it creates a visual hierarchy.

In this painting you can see that there is a contrast between light and dark colors.Contrast is the arrangement of opposite elements in a piece so as to create visual interest and excitement and it helps lead the viewers eye. In this painting contrast is not just a focal point, it has a meaning.Light colors represent the innocence so the man with his hands in the air stands out and darkest tones tries to show us the horrors of war.

Exercise 4

In this exercise, we were expected to make a 3-D design that includes grouping, repetition and primary principles of organization. Therefore i created a group that consists 2 rectangles, 1 square,2 triangles and 1 paralleogram and i made 4 of them to add my center part which has 1 rectangle,2 parallelograms and 2 triangles. In center part, the rectangle passes through the middle of the parallelograms. In this way it makes the whole structure stable.

Exercise 3

In this assignment, i designed one group with 2 triangles, 1 square and 1 rectangle and i put 4 of them around the center. Elements i used in the center are 3 triangles and 2 rectangles. Creating a center part is really important for me because it makes the thinking process and connecting the elements much easier. After the panel discussion i realized that i didn't use the potentials of the triangles well. Also some elements in my group which are parallel to each other looks 2-D because the gap between them is small.

Exercise 1

When i made my first design, i didn't have any knowlegde about making 3-D organisations. So my main focus was to make it balanced. We were not allowed to use any type of glue and the first idea that comes to my mind was opening slits and putting them together in accordance with certain rules.I have three elements in my design ; the ones with single side slits, the ones with single corner slits and the one with two slits on opposite sides.I put one square vertically and another one horizontally to create an order.I didn't want it to be linear so i added the squares with corner slits to create lenght and connected them with another square to make structure strong and stable.
